Everything else, your VAT return, your management accounts, your statutory accounts, starts with your bookkeeping. If that’s wrong or out of date, everything built on top of it is too. Digitax provides bookkeeping services for UK businesses, keeping your income, expenses and bank transactions accurate and current on Xero or QuickBooks, so the reports and returns that depend on it are right the first time.
Bookkeeping Support for UK Businesses
Digitax records and reconciles your transactions on a schedule that suits your business, weekly, monthly, or whatever keeps your books current without becoming a burden. We match your bank feed against your invoices and receipts, chase up anything that doesn’t add up, and keep your accounting software ready for whatever comes next, a VAT return, a set of management accounts, or your year end statutory accounts. If your bookkeeping has fallen behind, or never really got started, we’ll get it caught up rather than just maintain the mess going forward.
Financial Forecasting Services We Offer
Every forecast depends on what you’re trying to plan for, so we build it around your actual question rather than a generic template. Below are the two areas clients ask about most. If you also need bookkeeping or management accounts alongside your forecast, we handle both, since a forecast is only as reliable as the numbers behind it.
Monthly Bookkeeping & Bank Reconciliation
We process your invoices and expenses, reconcile your bank feed, and keep your accounting software accurate throughout the year, not just tidied up at year-end when your accountant asks for it.
Cloud Accounting Setup & Catch-Up Bookkeeping
We set you up on Xero or QuickBooks if you're not already using one, connect your bank feeds, and work through any backlog of unreconciled transactions until your books are current and something you can actually rely on.
Why Choose Digitax for Bookkeeping in Colchester?
We keep bookkeeping accurate and quietly up to date, not something that piles up until your accounts are due. You get a named contact who knows your business and your software, transactions reconciled on a schedule you can rely on, and a straight answer when something in your bank feed doesn’t match your records. Getting started takes one call: we look at your current bookkeeping, whether that’s a spreadsheet, a shoebox of receipts, or software that’s already partly set up, and take it from there. We’re based in Colchester and work with businesses face to face across Essex, but most of our bookkeeping clients are supported remotely across the UK.
Not Sure Your Books Are in Good Shape?
Whether your bookkeeping has fallen behind, you’re not confident your software is set up correctly, or you’re starting a business and don’t know where to begin, our team can check your position and take it from there.
FAQ About Bookkeeping Services
What does a bookkeeper actually do?
A bookkeeper records your day-to-day financial transactions: sales invoices, purchases, expenses and bank movements, and keeps them reconciled against your bank statements. It’s the ongoing record-keeping that everything else, your tax return, your VAT, your annual accounts, gets built from.
What's the difference between a bookkeeper and an accountant?
Bookkeeping is the recording and reconciling of transactions as they happen. Accounting takes that data and turns it into something to act on: management accounts, tax returns, statutory accounts, and advice. At Digitax we do both, so your bookkeeping and your accounting are always working from the same accurate numbers rather than being reconciled against each other later.
How often should my bookkeeping be done?
Most businesses are best served by monthly bookkeeping, often more, so your figures are always close to real-time and small errors get caught before they become big ones. Quieter businesses with fewer transactions can sometimes manage on a longer cycle. We’ll recommend a schedule based on how much is actually moving through your accounts
Do I need to use Xero or QuickBooks?
It helps, and most of our clients do, but it isn’t a requirement. If you’re already using one, we work from your existing setup. If you’re not using anything yet, we’ll set you up on whichever suits your business, since cloud software makes reconciliation, reporting and Making Tax Digital compliance far more straightforward than a spreadsheet.
How long do I need to keep my business records?
Sole traders and landlords generally need to keep records for at least 5 years after the 31 January submission deadline for the relevant tax year. Limited companies must keep accounting records for at least 6 years from the end of the financial year they relate to. We keep your digital records organised so you’re never scrambling to find something years later.
Can you help if my bookkeeping is months behind?
Yes, this is one of the most common reasons people come to us. We work through the backlog systematically, reconciling transaction by transaction, until your books are caught up and current, then move you onto a regular schedule so it doesn’t happen again.
Does bookkeeping help with my VAT returns?
Yes, accurate bookkeeping is what a VAT return is built from. If your bookkeeping is reconciled and current, preparing your VAT return is straightforward. If it isn’t, VAT return time becomes a scramble to work out what actually happened. We keep the two connected rather than treating them as separate jobs.
Can bookkeeping feed into my management accounts?
Yes. Your monthly or quarterly management accounts are only as good as the bookkeeping behind them. If we’re handling both, your management accounts come straight from reconciled, up-to-date books rather than a rushed reconstruction of the last few months.
Do you handle invoicing and chasing late payments?
We can, if it’s useful to your business. Raising invoices and following up on overdue ones keeps your bookkeeping accurate and your cash flow healthier, and we can build this into your bookkeeping service rather than leave it as something you have to remember separately.
How much does bookkeeping cost?
It depends on your transaction volume and how often you need it done. A sole trader with a handful of transactions a month costs far less than a business processing hundreds of invoices weekly. We’ll give you a fixed monthly price once we understand your volume, so there are no surprises.
Is my data secure if I use cloud accounting software?
Yes. Xero and QuickBooks are both established, UK-compliant platforms with encrypted bank connections and secure logins, and your data is backed up automatically rather than sitting on one laptop that could be lost or damaged.
How do I switch bookkeepers to Digitax?
We request access to your existing accounting software or records, review what’s already there, and pick up from wherever your bookkeeping currently stands. Most switches happen mid-period without disrupting your reporting.
